In Placer County, Interstate 80, Highway 49, and Highway 174 are a constant source of big rig traffic, which contributes to potentially deadly vehicle crashes. Studies have shown that about one in eight accidents involves a large truck, and 75 percent of people injured were occupants of other vehicles. The injuries sustained in accidents with trucks are often very severe, including traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and burn injuries. Big rig truck accidents are more likely to be fatal than auto accidents, and the occupant of the passenger or other type of vehicle is more likely to be killed—studies have found that 78 percent of those killed were in the other vehicles.
For years I defended trucking companies insured by St. Paul Insurance Company. When they got notice of a big rig accident anywhere in California, St. Paul immediately dispatched a team of specialists (me, a claims adjuster and an accident reconstructionist) to the accident scene. Often the C.H.P. was still there when we arrived. By knowing right away what happened, usually long before the injured people have even thought about who was going to pay for their hospital bills, the insurance companies can have a huge advantage.
